When hail hits home
With sudden hailstorms, like the one that just hit Central Texas, residents are often taken by surprise and may not know what to do after their home is damaged. Many of us are unsure if our homes are damaged at all! But the best time to address hail damage is not when you’re selling your house; it is right after the storm has passed. FLASH, the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, recommends contacting your homeowner’s insurance right after the hailstorm. An inspector from your insurance company will be able to properly assess the damage to your home. FLASH’s site also has helpful links on where hail occurs, what it will do to your roof, and how to check and protect your roof in the future.
Tri-Star Insurance in the Dallas/Fort Worth area reminds us that hail damage may not be visible on the ground, to the naked eye. “You may have a hail-damaged roof and not be able to detect the damage from the ground. The shingles on your roof are made up of tiny granules that can be damaged and destroyed by a hail storm. When these granules are damaged or lost, your roof will begin to lose its color, but it will also lose the fire rating protection that these granules provide.” Don’t be a victim of a storm years after it happens – address damage to your home now.
